Ragan expects another test of tires at Texas

0

STATESVILLE, North Carolina (BREAKING LIMITS RELEASE) – David Ragan, driver of the No. 34 Taco Bell Ford, comments on racing at Texas Motor Speedway:

"The only other mile-and-a-half that we’ve run to date is Las Vegas, and it doesn’t wear the tires as much as Texas does. Lap times are very similar, very fast, but tire wear is a lot different at Texas. You wear it a lot more. So that is something that we will focus on and make sure our engineers have a good game plan for it.

"Texas is a very, very fast racetrack. And with age, it’s gotten a little better. You can still bust off a 196- or 197-mile-an-hour lap, but then you slow down to the low 190s when you’re at a race pace and you’re moving around. It’ll be a good test to see what we’ve learned and how we’ve made our cars better from the first few races of the year. Pit crews are very important, too. You’ve got to have good stops because you’re going to take four tires all day long."

JUST THE FACTS: Ragan has 14 Sprint Cup career starts at Texas Motor Speedway … He has one pole (2011) and two top-10 finishes at Texas … His best finish at the 1.5-mile oval is seventh (2011).

Rain postpones NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway

FORT WORTH, Texas (ASSOCIATED PRESS) – The Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway has been postponed by rain.

It will be run Monday at 11 a.m., nine hours before the start of the NCAA national championship game in nearby Arlington.

It’s the third time in seven Sprint Cup Series races this season that rain has hampered the event. The season-opening Daytona 500 was stopped for more than six hours, and the race at Bristol Motor Speedway had two delays totaling more than five hours.

Sunday’s event at Texas didn’t start as scheduled as steady rain saturated the track. NASCAR’s new track drying system requires two hours to dry the 1.5-mile speedway, but the unseasonably cool temperatures made the task more difficult.

Logano holds on for Sprint Cup win in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (ASSOCIATED PRESS) – Joey Logano made a last-lap pass of Jeff Gordon during extra laps after a late caution Monday in a rain-delayed race at Texas, becoming the seventh different winner in as many Sprint Cup races this season,

Logano had a 2.2-second lead on teammate Brad Keselowski and was within a half-lap of taking the white flag, which would have guaranteed no extra laps. But then came the caution for debris after Kurt Busch’s car brushed the wall and one of his tires tore apart.

On the ensuing pit stop, Gordon took only two tires and exited first. Both Team Penske drivers took four tires, but Keselowski missed a chance to become the season’s first two-time winner when he was penalized for speeding on pit road.

Johnson wins at Texas, Gordon irate at Keselowski

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Jimmie Johnson won his third consecutive Texas fall race Sunday, when none of the eight championship contenders were able to clinch one of the final four spots in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Johnson emerged from a frantic finish, the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish after his teammate and Chase contender Jeff Gordon spun out from the front after contact with Brad Keselowski.

Gordon was leading on the first green-white-checkered attempt on lap 335, in a race scheduled for 334 laps, when he took the outside lane. When Gordon drifted high, Keselowski pushed through the gap, and made contact that left Gordon’s car with a cut tire.

While Johnson celebrated his fourth victory at Texas, an irate Gordon got out of his car and confronted Keselowski, who appeared to be spitting blood after there were punches thrown.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Jimmie Johnson won his fourth consecutive fall race at Texas, overcoming Brad Keselowski’s dominating Chase-contending car with three laps to go Sunday.

Keselowski led a track-record 312 of 334 laps and worked hard to hold on to the lead after the final restart with 18 laps left in a race he felt he needed to win to get one of the four spots in the Chase of the Sprint Cup championship finale in two weeks.

That leaves three spots up for grabs at Phoenix, the last race before the Nov. 22 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kyle Busch is second behind retiring four-time champion Jeff Gordon, Johnson’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports and the only driver locked to race for the title. Kevin Harvick is third and Martin Truex Jr. fourth.

Keselowski is sixth in points after coming oh so close to winning in Texas.

Flooding continues across the South

Portions of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi remain under flood water following record rainfall. NBC’s Dan Scheneman reports.

A new week brings new worries for many rain-soaked communities across the South.

The Sabine River is on the rise, expected to crest midweek, setting a new and dangerous record.

“I’ve been doing this for 26 years. It’s the highest I’ve ever seen,” says Beauregard Parish, Louisiana Director of Emergency Preparedness Glen Mears.

Across the river, the Texas town of Deweyville is already completely surrounded by water.

1,200 hundred residents have been forced to evacuate, and it could be days before they are allowed to return.

Meanwhile, areas along along the Pearl River separating Louisiana and Mississippi are seeing the possibility of worst flooding in more than three decades. Residents there are rushing to fill sandbags to protect the hundreds of homes under threat before heading for higher ground.

Mystery Surrounds Daycare Death

Family says they don’t know elderly woman who signed their 4-year-old son out of daycare, moments before he was run over and killed in parking lot.  KPRC’s Jennifer Bauer reports.

A Texas family is demanding answers after a young child died Tuesday when he was struck by an SUV outside a day care center in Harris County.

The 4-year-old has been identified by family members as Anthony Craft.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies said an 81-year-old woman came to pick up her grandchild and another child at the K.D. Learning Center.

Her grandchild was in her Lincoln Navigator and when she started to back up, Anthony was somehow caught between the wheel and another car.  When the woman tried to catch him, she fell out of the SUV.

“The Navigator itself had no one driving it, made a full circle and came to a stop at the entrance to the K.D. Learning Center,” Thomas Gilliland of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

The boy’s family say they have no idea who the woman is, or why she was allowed to sign their son out of daycare.

“We don’t know this lady, she has no authorization to pick up my child,” Charles Craft said.  “I don’t know why he was outside the day care when this lady is not supposed to pick up my child.”

Lawyer: Texas officer in police shooting protected by immunity

NEW ORLEANS (AP) –  A lawyer for a white police officer who shot and killed a black man after a foot chase argues his client should be protected by federal immunity.

An appeals court heard arguments Tuesday in the case of Charles Kleinert, an Austin police officer working with the FBI on bank robberies when he encountered Larry Jackson Jr.

Kleinert has said his gun discharged accidentally during a struggle.

A grand jury indicted Kleinert in 2013 but a federal judge later dismissed it, citing a 126-year old court ruling protecting federal officers from state prosecution in certain cases.

Kleinert’s lawyer, Randy Leavitt, told the three-judge panel Tuesday that his client went to the bank as a federal officer investigating a robbery.

But Texas prosecutor Rosa Theofanis called on the judges to overturn the lower court’s decision.

Hurricane Harvey Approaching Texas Coastline, Schedule for Landfall Late Friday

0
0

MACON, Georgia. (41NBC/WMGT) – Hurricane Harvey will be the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States in more than a decade. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) describes a “major hurricane” as a Category 3 or higher, with winds of at least 111 miles per hour. Category 3 hurricanes are capable of producing devastating damage and loss of life.

Wilma was the last major hurricane to hit the United States, making landfall as a Category 3 in Florida. Harvey will be the first hurricane to hit Texas since 2008, when Hurricane Ike made landfall over Galveston Island.

Many features of Harvey are visible on satellite and radar. The eye is the center of the hurricane. This is the calmest part of the system. Winds are slower, rain is little and sky is clear in this area of the storm. However the “calm” of the storm only lasts for minutes before the eyewall returns with more intensity.

The eyewall surrounds the eye with strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds. The eyewall is the most powerful part of the system.

A little further from the core of rotation are the spiral rainbands. These outer rain bands can extend as much as a few hundred miles away from the eye, depending on the size of the system itself. The rainbands consist of shower and thunderstorm activity, spiraling around the core of rotation. Winds are typically weaker than the eyewall, but the outer rainbands can still produce ample rainfall. Sometimes tornadoes can develop in this area of the storm as well.

This morning, Harvey was listed as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 110 mph – literally just 1 mph away from becoming a Category 3 hurricane. The system was moving northwest at about 10 mph. By this afternoon, it will likely strengthen into a Category 3. Harvey is forecast to make landfall late Friday into early Saturday morning. The landfall path will stretch 30 miles from Port O’Connor to Matagorda Bay, which is about 70 miles northeast of Corpus Christi, TX.

Into the weekend, Harvey will weaken as it moves over land. By Sunday, it should be stationed around Houston, TX as a tropical storm. Regardless of the storm’s status, several threats still exist. Hurricane Harvey will threaten the Texas coastline and neighboring locations with widespread power outages due to tropical storm or hurricane force winds, downed trees, damaged homes and serious flooding as a result of intense rainfall combined with storm surge.

Throughout the next 72 hours, Harvey will drop 20-25 inches of rain across the Texas coastline. There may be isolated amounts of 30 inches of rain with heavier downpours as the system stalls out. Through the next seven days, locations from Corpus Christi to Houston could see over 20 inches of rain. Heavy rainfall will extend northward and eastward into east central Texas and Louisiana heading into next week.

A Tropical Storm Warning (orange on map) stretches from Brownsville to Houston. Winds 39 mph to 73 mph are expected to occur in this area within the next 36 hours. A Hurricane Warning (pink on map) is in effect just south of Corpus Christi stretching northeast to Victoria, TX until Monday morning. In this area, 74 mph winds or higher are expected along with high water and/or high waves which could result in flooding. All these locations and northward including Austin, TX are under a Flash Flood Watch until Monday morning.

Mandatory and voluntary evacuations have been ordered along the Texas coastline. People in the path of this storm system should be prepared and heed the warnings. Harvey is likely to produce significant damage to locations in the path of the storm.

The 41First Alert Storm team will be tracking Harvey as it moves closer to the Texas coast and makes landfall. For more information, follow our meteorologists on Facebook and Twitter.
